Happy New Year

calendar1 July marks a "clean slate" for the large majority of businesses with the commencement of a new financial year in Australia. The ball is about to bounce and the score card reads Nil/Nil. What better time to reflect on where you are at and make some personal and business goals for the coming 12 months.

Australia's Wealthiest - The ATO is Watching

calendarThe recently released BRW Rich 200 reveals a diverse mix of Australian entrepreneurs. An unsurprising feature of the list is that no fewer than 22 of the 200 (11%) have a significant participation in the thoroughbred industry. That figure would have been greater if Nathan Tinkler not fallen out of the top 200. But thoroughbred and wealth are ATO fodder. The Australian Taxation Office has a high wealth individuals (HWI) unit that scrutinises the wealthy.

ADAM’S SOAPBOX: Know your Segment and know your costs

With the selling of yearlings at Major Australasian sales complete for the 2013 season is there a defining trend or important aspect to note?

In my view, the varying results underline the importance of understanding the market place in which you compete. This diverse, global industry has many segments of the market from colt to fillies to early/late types to local or international pedigrees.

The major sales companies try to position a sale by carefully selecting the catalogue and eventually trying to attract the most suitable buying bench for that sale. For instance, it could be argued that New Zealand Bloodstock has shifted slightly in recent years from being classic style of yearlings to more early maturing and speed bred types. Conversely, Melbourne Premier is evolving into a more classic type sale that may attract more international buyers as evidenced by its inaugural "Blue Riband" section of the sale. For breeders it is crucial to be across such trends when breeding and eventually placing yearlings for sale.

Exotic Racing locations - #173 "Fiji"

FijiUpon my recent visit to Fiji sampling local beer and coconuts, a break from the 4 legged variety was necessary - a freshen up of sorts.

However, upon reading the Fiji Sun the headline "Dilau wins King Cup" took my attention. The accompanying photo revealed the vigorous and unconventional riding style of two jockeys (without helmets) with their heavy share of whip action urging their horse to the finish line of the 4th Lulu's King Cup at Avivia Horse Racing Course in Sabeto, Nadi on Saturday. Wildcard entry Dilau of Nailaga, caused a major upset as the seven year old Stallion took the 4th edition of the race hosted by Aviva Farms in conjunction with Sunfilm Productions.

Racecourse owner/ event organiser, Livai Tora was impressed with the turnout. "Around 500 horse racing enthusiasts, including tourists, enjoyed the race. We are going to hold monthly competitions" he said.

It is fascinating when you consider the exotic locations and horse race formats that span the globe. The reach is extraordinary and a documentary beckons. My favourite is the Il Palio but this Fiji version was worth a mention. We will look to continue this section on Exotic Racing locations in future editions of Stable Talk, Any submissions would be greatly appreciated.
